Die Kombination von Waffe und Eigenschutz ist mindestens so alt wie Schwert und Schild. Mit der Einführung der Schusswaffen bedeutet Eigenschutz den Schutz von Mannschaft und gerät bei Waffen, die entsprechend ihrer taktischen Aufgabe der direkten Feindeinwirkung ausgesetzt sind, gegen Munition, die aufgrund chemischer oder kinetischer Energie wirkt, und gegen ABC-Waffen
.
Bei der Betrachtung des Eigenschutzes gegen Munition deren Wirkung einen Treffer voraussetzt, ist davon auszugehen, dass einmal die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Treffers gering gehalten und zum anderen die Wirkung eines Treffers verhindert oder zumindest reduziert werden sollte.
Um die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Treffers so klein wie möglich zu machen, ist die dargebotene Zielfläche klein (günstige Silhouette) und bei beweglichen Waffenträgern wie Kampfpanzern die mögliche Fahrgeschwindigkeit groß zu halten.
Auf den Schutz gegen die Wirkung von Treffern durch Panzerung und auf den ABC-Schutz wird im folgenden kurz eingegangen.
